Your Home Insurance Policy Might Not Cover What You Think It Does
When Was the Last Time You Checked Your Home Insurance?
Home insurance is one of those things that’s easy to set up and then forget about. Once the paperwork is signed and the payments are automatic, most of us don’t think about it again unless we need it.
And if that sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone.
According to a recent Harris Poll, 41% of homeowners with insurance haven’t made a change to their policy in more than a year, while another 20% haven’t updated their policy since the day they purchased it.
Insurance providers aren’t always checking in, either:
56% of policyholders say their provider hasn’t reached out to review their coverage in more than a year.
21% say they’ve never had that kind of check-in.
88% say they would appreciate being notified if their coverage no longer fits their needs.
Life gets busy, and reviewing an insurance policy probably isn’t at the top of anyone’s favorite-things-to-do list. But as your home and life change, your coverage may need to change along with them.
Consider this your gentle annual reminder to take a few minutes and make sure your policy still feels right for where you are today.
The Coverage You Think You Have vs. What You Actually Have
The Hanover Insurance Group’s 2025 Homeowners Coverage Awareness Report found an interesting gap between the coverage homeowners know about and the protection they actually have.
For example:
Umbrella coverage: 83% have heard of it, but only 39% have discussed it with an agent.
Valuables coverage: 87% know it exists, but only 26% have it.
Cyber coverage: 46% know it’s available, but only 7% carry it.
Simply knowing that a type of coverage exists doesn’t necessarily mean you’re protected by it.
In fact, 66% of homeowners surveyed said they would be interested in adding umbrella coverage once someone explained what it actually does.
The takeaway? Many homeowners aren’t intentionally skipping coverage. Sometimes, we simply don’t know what questions to ask or what options might apply to our lives.
When a Coverage Gap Becomes a Bigger Problem
Unfortunately, the worst time to discover a gap in your insurance is after something has already happened.
The Harris Poll found that one in three homeowners who had filed a claim said their coverage fell short of what they needed. Within that group, 14% said none of their claim was covered.
Imagine dealing with a burst pipe, storm damage, or another unexpected home repair and then learning that your insurance doesn’t cover as much as you thought.
That can be especially difficult when 67% of policyholders surveyed said an unexpected $1,000 expense would be challenging for their household.
A little clarity beforehand can make a big difference later.
A Simple Five-Minute Insurance Check
Reviewing your policy doesn’t need to become an afternoon-long research project. Set aside a few minutes this week, pull up your current policy, and look at four simple things:
Your dwelling coverage limit. Does it reflect what it could cost to rebuild your home today, rather than simply what you originally paid for it?
Your additional coverage. Look for endorsements or added protection for things like jewelry, artwork, water backup, or other valuables.
Your last policy review. When was the last time your coverage was reviewed or updated?
What has changed since then? Think about renovations, a new roof, a home office, major purchases, or other meaningful changes to your home or lifestyle.
If you come across something you’re unsure about, that’s a great reason to reach out to your insurance professional and ask.
Five Minutes Today Can Bring Peace of Mind Tomorrow
This doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with your current policy. Your coverage was created around your home and your life at a particular moment in time and both can change quite a bit over the years.
Taking five minutes to review your policy now is simply a way to make sure your coverage has kept up with you.
Because when something unexpected happens, the last thing you want to wonder is whether you’re protected.
A quick check today can give you a little more confidence, clarity, and peace of mind for whatever comes next.
